Raw Strength Competition
Saturday November 22, 2008 10AM-12PM Hosted by Champion Vegan Bodybuilder Robert Cheeke

List of Events and Descriptions

Four strength events will be completed by competitors and a Rainbow Warrior will emerge victorious with the highest accumulative score factoring in every event from the Raw Strength Competition.

The events, their outlines, the rules and scoring are all listed below.  Review the list of events and begin preparation.  One men's champion and one women's champion will stand tall and be recognized as the overall winners and all contestants will be acknowledged and rewarded for their involvement and achievement in the Raw Games Strength Competition.

The events list:

Coconut Toss
Tire Flip
Sand Bag Lift and Carry
Island Car Push (1971 VW Bus provided by Island resident Hopper)

The Rules:
The entire competition will take place in approximately 2 hours and is limited to 16 male competitors (8 from ages 18-39 and 8 from ages 39 and over) and 16 female competitors (8 from ages 18-39 and 8 from ages 39 and over).  This will be determined on a first come, first serve basis through registration.  Early registration is highly encouraged. Competitors will need to check in at least 30 minutes prior to the competition to get their instructions, placement in order of participation, and all details pertaining to the event.  Competitors are encouraged to arrive early to warm-up, stretch and prepare themselves for competition.
In events that provide multiple attempts, the best performance will be recorded, not an average of the allotted attempts.

Scoring and Awards

Points will be awarded for the top 3 finishers in each event.  Each event winner will be recognized as the winner of that specific event and all scores will be accumulated for an overall score to be totaled at the completion of all events.  The point system awarded will be the following:

     1st place = 10 points
     2nd place = 6 points
     3rd place = 2 point

Awards will be presented to each individual event winner, one for the men's winner and one for the women's winner, as well as 3rd, 2nd and 1st Awards for the Overall Champions with the total accumulated score at the completion of all three strength events.  Awards will come in many forms including tangible items donated from such companies as Vegan Essentials, Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness, Vega, and many more.  Certificates and awards will also be given out to event and overall winners. If at the end of competition there is a tie in points, a tug of war will be performed between the individuals tied for first place.  The winner of the tug of war will be the overall Raw Strength Champion.

All contestants are advised to have fun, be safe, and encourage each other in all of the contests, while putting forth a great effort to create the best results possible and create the best overall friendly competitive environment.

Event Descriptions:

Coconut Toss
Event Details:

Check in 30 minutes prior to the event start time.

The Official Coconut to be tossed for distance will be selected by the event organizers and will be used by all competitors unless damaged.  If the coconut is damaged, a replacement coconut of approximately the same size and weight will take its place.

Competitors will get up to 5 practice or "warm up" throws to get familiar with the coconut before the actual competition begins.

The Coconut Toss competition will involve 3 attempts to throw a coconut for distance.  The coconut may be tossed with one arm in shot-put form, or with two arms in a swinging motion or in any method that is comfortable for the competitor.  The distance will be recorded where the coconut lands, not where it rolls to.

Each competitor will have 3 attempts.  If there is a tie, a tie-breaker throw will decide the winner.

Each competitor will be awarded points based on placing in each event for the Overall Raw Strength Title, which rewards the highest overall score from the combined four strength events.

One men's and one women's winner from this event will receive a certificate and medal noting the championship earned in the individual event, as well as 5 points to be factored into the overall accumulative scoring.

Special equipment needed:  None

Tire Flip
Event Details:
The Official Tire to be flipped will be selected by the event organizers.  The men's tire and women's tire will be slightly different weights (to be determined and listed soon). Robert Cheeke will arrive on the Island a week before the competition to select the proper equipment to be used.

There will be a 100 foot flat course to flip the tire down as many times as possible in a timed event.  The number of flips will not be a factor in determining a winner unless no competitors are able to complete the 100 foot course.  The times will be recorded and the fastest times will determine the winners of the event.

Competitors will have 10 minutes before the competition to practice and get familiar with the tire.

Each competitor will get up to 2 attempts if desired to complete the course in the fastest time. The best time of all attempts will be the recorded one for each competitor.  If there is a tie, a tie-breaker race between the competitors will determine the winner.

Each competitor will be awarded points based on placing in each event for the Overall Raw Strength Title, which rewards the highest overall score from the combined four strength events.

One men's and one women's winner from this event will receive a certificate and award noting the championship earned in the individual event, as well as 5 points to be factored into the overall accumulative scoring.

Special equipment needed:  Gloves are recommended, back support belt is also a recommendation

Sand Bag Lift and Carry
Event Details:
The Sand Bag Lift and Carry may require the most total strength from each competitor, of all the contests.

The Official Sand Bags will be selected by the event organizers with specific weights for men's and women's divisions.  The tentative weights of the sand bags will be 30 pounds for women and 50 pounds for men.

Competitors will have two minutes to grab a sandbag, carry it 25 feet, load it into the back of a pick-up truck, return to the stack of sandbags, and repeat the process.  The winner will be the competitor who loads the most sandbags in the allotted time.  If there is a tie, a one-minute tie-breaker with the same process will be held to determine the winner.

Each competitor will be awarded points based on placing in each event for the Overall Raw Strength Title, which rewards the highest overall score from the combined four strength events.

Car Pull
Event Details:

This is the Grand Daddy of the strength competition. Each competitor will have the privilege of pulling a hand-painted 1971 VW Bus provided by well known Island resident Hopper, on a 200 ft. flat course. The bus will be in neutral and will contain a driver for safety. Competitors will use a rope attached to the front of the bus to pull it in anyway possible to move it down the road.

Hopper's Hippie Art Bus For The Car Push

Competitors will pull for time and distance. The fastest time over the 200 ft. course, or the furthest distance if there are no finishers, will determine the winner of this contest.

Each competitor will get one attempt to pull the car down the course.

Competitors are encouraged to wear good closed-toed shoes and warm-up before participating, just as in all other events. A back support belt and gloves will be provided, but competitors are encouraged to bring their own gloves or support belt to establish a good fit.

This event will likely highlight the entire strength competition, so be prepared to put your best foot forward, (then the next foot, then the next foot, etc. pun intended for the “pull”).

A special thank you goes out to Hopper, the owner of the incredible vehicle we’re fortunate enough to have for this highlight event of the games.

Special equipment needed: A good pair of shoes to grip the ground, a back support belt, gloves, and wrist supports if you think you need them, are recommendations.

Events will take place simultaneously and athletes will be split into groups by random, to expedite the process. Therefore, while some athletes are participating in the Coconut Toss, others will be competing in the Tire Flip, etc. There will be a rotation every 30 minutes, to ensure that all four events are completed within the 2-hour allocated time period.

There will be event volunteers, organizers, and lead organizers such as Robert Cheeke on site to assist with any questions you may have.
